Distance Befriending

The Distance Befriending service is available across the Highland Council Region including Badenoch and Strathspey, Inverness, Nairn and Ardersier, Skye and Lochaber, Ross and Cromarty, Caithness and Sutherland.

The service is aimed at reducing loneliness and isolation for people who have experience of mental ill health and who are lonely or isolated, either because of living in a remote area or due to the nature of their mental health difficulties.

People can choose either Telephone; Letter or Email befriending, whichever best suits their needs.

The service is a 1-1 confidential contact between a trained volunteer and the friend. The safety and confidentiality of our volunteers and friends is paramount. Great care is taken to match people who are as compatible as possible so genuine friendships can develop and last. There is regular monthly contact for volunteers with the Befrienders Highland co-ordinators and reviews with both friend and volunteer are carried out every 6 months to make sure that everything is fine with the friendship and there are no difficulties. Co-ordinators are always available should anything arise that either party wants to talk through.

Face to Face

The Face to Face Befriending service is available for people living in the Inverness, Nairn and Ardersier areas. 

The service aims to reduce loneliness and isolation for people who have experience of mental ill health and to help build confidence though regular social contact.   This is a 1-1 confidential service where a trained volunteer and friend meet together on a regular basis (usually weekly) and participate in a social activity enjoyed by both.   There are a whole range of activities enjoyed by our friends and volunteers ranging from:
  • Meeting for a coffee and a chat
  • Going to the cinema
  • Swimming
  • Walking
  • Museums and galleries
  • Having lunch
  • Going to shows and exhibitions etc etc etc
