Group Befriending

At Befrienders Highland we have a number of groups which are open to all of our Friends and Volunteers in any of our services equally.

The Groups are designed to encourage participation, socialisation and skills and knowledge development and for members to feel a part of a team of like minded people.  They are for everyone with a shared interest to 'have a go' in a safe, encouraging environment where new skills and interests can be developed and new friends made.

Friends and Volunteers are also encouraged to take on more responsible roles within the group management if they wish and support is given to enable skills development in a variety of roles.   This has proved a hugely successful initiative and many have developed increased skills and confidence as a result of their participation.

New ideas for new groups are always sought so anyone with ideas should contact Alan Duncan Groups Coordinator

Groups for 2017

'Walk and Talk' Walking Group.  This group will meet monthly and all Friends and Volunteers are welcome to come along to any meeting, booking not necessary.  Routes in and around Inverness and Nairn initially.

Participants will share a scenic walk together (nothing too strenuous) followed by a hot drink and chat in a cafe afterwards.  A great opportunity to get some excercise, socialise and get to know  others in a safe and relaxed way.

Gardening Group.  This group will meet monthly and all Friends and Volunteers are welcome to particiapte.  Work will take place at an allotment in beautiful gardens along the canel in Inverness.

Members will learn gardening and growing skills from experts, all equipment provided. They will learn how to grow fruit and vegetables and take a share of the produce when ready.  A great opportunity to get out in the fresh air, learn valuable skills and to work as part of a team, encouraging each other and making new friends along the way.

Cinema Group.  This group will meet monthly and all Friends and Volunteers are welcome to participate.  A great opportunity to see a wide variety of films (selected by the group members) and to particiapte in a group discussion over a hot drink following the film (compulsory).

Members will pay what they can afford towards the cost of the tickets.  This is a great way to get out and see the latest films and to socialise and get to know people in a safe and interesting way.

WISH Craft Group.  This is our longstanding group who communicate through a quarterly magazine to which participants provide various articles, photographs, biographies, patterns etc.

The magazine is edited by a volunteer but new editors are always welcome from any Friend or volunteer group member.  The group meets annually for a get together, craft workshops and lunch (all free).

'Write on' Creative Writing Group.  This is our other longstanding group who communicate through our quarterly magazine 'Write On'.  Group members particiate by submitting any form of their creative writing for the magazine, ranging from short stories, poems, ditties, reviews etc.

The magazine is edited by a volunteer and new editors are always welcome.  It is anticipated in 2017 that this group will be given the opportunity for a get together and a creative writing workshop (watch this space).
